Life Story for Karl R. Kaltenmaier

KARL R. KALTENMAIER
October 31, 1948 – December 11, 2022

Woodhaven – Mr. Karl R. Kaltenmaier, 74, passed away Monday, December 12, 2022 in his home. Karl was raised on a farm in Cobleskill, New York, and later made his permanent home in Woodhaven. In June 1968, Karl enlisted in the United States Marines Corps. Serving with distinction during the Vietnam War, Karl participated in live combat and was awarded numerous medals including: Republic of Vietnam CROSS OF GALLANTRY with 1 Palm; Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star; National Defense Service Medal; and the Combat Action Ribbon. A handyman since the day he could pick up a tool, Karl later worked as an electrician for Local 3, and often joked about how his job took him to foreign lands such as Japan, Italy and France; distant shores that were visited via his work in their U.S. embassies. Karl’s great passion however was fishing. He built his own poles and even sold some of them to other fisherman who were impressed by their craftsmanship. Over the years Karl kept the freezers of friends and family stocked with fresh fish, won numerous pools for catching the biggest fish on the boat and in August 2000, was featured in the GO section of The Brooklyn Paper for catching a monstrous 9.2 lb. fluke. The consummate family man, Karl joined his wife Roberta in populating their home with a rotating menagerie of dogs, cats, birds, lizards and ferrets, loved fishing with his son Kyle, and enjoyed spending the holidays with his loved ones and seeing their smiles when they opened his gifts. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is predeceased by his late parents, Marie Rose and Eugene, his wife Roberta, and his sisters Johanna and Jeannie. Karl is survived by his son Kyle, his stepdaughter Macie and her husband Trae, and his granddaughter Violet.
Funeral Services will take place on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from the NF Walker Funeral Home in Woodhaven, New York. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, NY. Visitation on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 4-8pm.
