Life Story for Desmond Rudolph Mullings

Obituary

Desmond Rudolph Gordon Mullings was born on January 4, 1939 in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to the late George Mullings and Clarice Francis Mullings. He was a loving son, protective brother, supportive father, and caring friend. He attended Manning’s High School in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, where he developed a love for playing soccer and cricket. After graduating High School, Desmond started his career, working for the Ministry of Housing in the 1960’s and throughout the 1970’s which saw the birth of his first child, Tricia in 1972. In 1981, Desmond migrated to the United States, establishing himself in New York and started working for NYC Housing Preservation & Development to support a growing family that had the addition of his son Richard, who was born in 1983. He was a proud, dignified man who valued nothing above his family. He made sacrifices to ensure both his children and stepchildren had a quality education, life, and a home. During the city furlough season, he would work two carrier jobs in order to maintain support of his family. Desmond’s love for family had extended to the community. He cared and advocated for quality-of-life goals in his community and engaged in many political discussions with friends about prominent political figures, policies, and events. He always lent a helping hand to friends in dire need and was never short of showing grace. When he was not with his friends, some of the pastimes he enjoyed were tuning up his car, playing the lotto, and listening to classic rock, R & B, or reggae hits.
