Obituary for Lawrence Rickert
Lawrence “Larry” H. Rickert age 74, passed away in Laconia, NH on January 25, 2020 after a lengthy period of declining health. He spent most of his life in Brooklyn, with some time in New Jersey with his young family, and his last days in New Hampshire.
Larry was born on September 23rd, 1945, in Brooklyn to parents Lawrence H Rickert, Sr. and Mildred Rickert. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, and served in the US Army, stationed in Germany. He had a long career at Bell Telephone (later Verizon), most of which was technical related, but most enjoyed educating his co-workers how to use computers as the technicalogical revolution began.
Larry had a passion for collecting books, toys, trains and movies. You could always find him either reading, doodling, drawing or crafting. He combined his interest of creating and engineering into designing and building model train layouts, which he shared with others during his attendance at many train conventions around the northeast. Not surprisingly, he made many great friends through that passion.
One of Larry’s greatest attributes was his ability to start a conversation easily and made fast friends with anyone he met. His own children and grandchildren have countless fond, happy memories of being around him. Larry was the epitome of being a child at heart.
He rediscovered God later in life and embraced his local church, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He and Nancy were both proud to earn the distinction of becoming Deacons of the Church. Many great friendships were developed there, and he became a loving Godfather to several. He sang in the choir and reveled in participating in the Men’s Club. Most of all, he enjoyed helping and advising the many kids in the Homework Club.
Larry enjoyed vacationing with family and led many adventures with them. He found fun in the ordinary and every day. Fishing was his happy place and often thought of it, even as his health declined. He was a lifelong fan (sometimes begrudgingly) of the Giants and Mets. Gardening interested him and he enjoyed planting and picking fresh vegetables from his garden and telling folks how it was coming along.
His family is very thankful of the care provided by Lakes Region General Hospital and Peabody Home in Franklin, NH during his all-to-be brief stay in NH, as well as all his friends who reached out to him when he needed to hear their voice.
Larry is survived by his son Gregg Rickert, and his wife, Janet, of Dingman’s Ferry, PA; his daughter Laurel Ciechon, and her husband, Kevin, of Plymouth,, NH; and also by his grandchildren Anna, Brady and Cameron Ciechon, also of Plymouth, NH.
He is predeceased by both of his parents, his wife Nancy (Schwimmer) Rickert and brother Kenneth Rickert, both of Brooklyn, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust or St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church
